Discovering God

Some discoveries happen by complete accident such as finding an art treasure at a garage sale. Others are the result of diligent and dedicated investigation such as finding a cure for a deadly disease. But no matter how it happens, the greatest discovery each of us will ever make is the discovery of God. This only makes sense since the answer to every one of life's big questions has something to do with God.

Now, let's be honest. It is normal to have questions when it comes to God. Can I be sure He exists? If He exists, does He care about me? Can I know Him? How? At Liberty, we are all about helping people find answers and discover God.

We suggest that you begin with the Bible. Over the years, the Bible has proven itself to be the source for answers to our most important questions about life and God. God communicates to us in its pages that He knows and loves each of us personally. What's exciting is that He longs for us to know Him, too.

Life is all about relationships, and it is no different with God, our Creator. He made us to have a relationship with us. But disobedience and stubborn independence (something the Bible calls sin) alienated us from God. However, God so desired a relationship with each of us that He sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to restore us to Himself. (I Peter 3:18)

Although Jesus told us and showed us a great deal about God, it was His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead that makes our relationship with God possible. For in this way, Jesus Christ remedied the problem of our sin by providing for the righteous and just standards of a perfect God.

So, entering into a personal relationship with God is a matter of faith in Jesus Christ as one's savior. Our tendency is to base it on rules and regulations and rituals. But no amount of good behavior can undo the wrong which we have done. Our sin can not be washed away by our good deeds. Only Jesus Christ's sacrifice can cleanse us. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Faith in Jesus Christ as one's savior is acknowledging that a relationship with God is not based upon anything we do but upon what Jesus Christ has done for us. (Titus 3:5) It believes God's promise that He forgives our sin and gives us eternal life based upon what Jesus has done for us. (John 3:16) You will make life's greatest discovery by placing your faith in Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. You will make the discovery of a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe, the God who made us and loves us.

So, if you are just beginning or nearing the end of your search to discover God, we encourage you to keep seeking after Him. God has never disappointed the honest seeker. The Bible tells us that God rewards those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6) and draws near to those who draw near to Him (James 4:8) Anyone can be forgiven and restored to a relationship with God because of what Jesus Christ has done.
